Shiatsu
About Shiatsu
Rooted in the wisdom of oriental medicine, Shiatsu is an holistic Japanese bodywork. Shiatsu, meaning “finger pressure” in Japanese, uses the power of touch and pressure, as well as a variety of stretches and rotations it encourage a balanced free energy throughout the body, (called Ki in Japanese).
For many different reasons Ki can stop flowing freely and this produces a symptom or symptoms. Shiatsu offers an holistic way of interpreting and understanding these symptoms and a therapeutic bodywork approach that rebalances the flow of Ki, improving the symptoms as well as encouraging deep relaxation and a greater sense of well being. Anybody can benefit from Shiatsu. It can be effective in helping a wide range of stress related problems and chronic conditions.
Touch is the oldest sensory system in the human body and therefore lies at the core of our existence. It links us to the outside world and makes our life experiences real. Yes, our need to touch and be touched is vital to our very survival. Using words of Pauline Sasaki “Through human touch we experience love, care and compassion, emotions that give us the support, strength and courage we need in order to initiate healing on many levels of both body and soul”.
The Japanese healing art of Shiatsu creates connections without words.
The Treatment
Shiatsu is applied through a layer of clothing, preferably cotton. A treatment usually takes place on a futon, (a Japanese mattress) on the floor, although it is possible to receive Shiatsu in a seated position on a chair (for those unable to lie down) or lying on a bed. Avoid eating for one hour before the session.
A session lasts approximately one hour, with the first session taking longer so the practitioner can take a detailed case history to develop a full picture of your health according to the principles of Oriental Medicine. The treatment begins with a gentle pressure on the abdomen, called Hara. Followed by subtle manipulation and stretching to stimulate the movement of energy.
I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the Shiatsu session.
